A Note from Jessalyn
To me, providing therapy is about restoring a sense of humanity in people. In a society that constantly dictates who we should be, how we should feel, and how we should live, therapy offers a sanctuary. It's a place where individuals can reconnect with their true selves, free from the pressure to perform or overthink. In therapy, you simply get to be.
I have dedicated a significant amount of time to mentoring first-generation students of color. Many of these students faced challenges such as anxiety, imposter syndrome, first-generation guilt, and struggles with self-love and self-care. I found immense fulfillment in listening to their stories, empathizing with their experiences, and offering guidance and support as they navigated these challenges. Being able to relate to their struggles on a personal level allowed me to build a deep connection with them, which in turn fostered trust and openness. This experience sparked a profound passion in me for serving first-generation POC, particularly young adults between the ages of 18-24. I am inspired by their resilience and motivated to help them overcome the barriers they face, empowering them to thrive both academically and personally.
As a first-generation Dominican-American woman and the first in my family born in the U.S., I understand the challenges of navigating life without a roadmap. Without the support for things like homework, college applications, or mental health resources, I often felt overwhelmed and isolated. In my culture, mental health is a taboo topic, making it difficult to seek emotional support from my family. I learned to research, advocate for myself, and cope with these pressures. Therapy played a crucial role in helping me honor my feelings and taught me self-advocacy in a world that often felt unwelcoming.
Because of my background and experiences, I deeply understand the unique challenges faced by first-generation people of color. I know what it's like to feel lost, unsupported, and unsure of where to turn. My personal journey enables me to connect with my clients on a profound level, providing not just professional guidance but genuine empathy and understanding. You can trust that I’ve been where you are and that I’m committed to helping you navigate these challenges, find your voice, and thrive. In our work together, I may incorporate skills from therapeutic modalities like CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
My goal as your therapist is to provide you with a safe, non judgemental environment where you can express yourself freely. I am committed to providing you with a space where you can feel seen, valued, and empowered to find your voice. I look forward to helping you work towards your goals and giving you the space to truly learn and embrace who you are.
